Spring Fever

If you've got the uncontrollable urge to remove layers, bask in the sun, roll your car windows down and just be outside, you may have a case of Spring Fever.  The best cure is to go skiing or riding!  With soft snow conditions, mild temps and a little extra light each night, now's the best time to do some laps on the hill.

Happy President's Day

What a perfect set-up for this President's Day Monday - powder yesterday to packed powder groomers today!  Mild temps will have folks t-shirt wearing and slope-side chillin'.  We're recommending snow bathing today.  Modeled after forest bathing which is the practice of being in the presence of trees, snow bathing is all about being on, in and around SNOW!  Said to help promote lowering heart rate and blood pressure along with boosting your immune system and overall feeling of well-being, we hope you find your zen on our mountain today.

The Promise of a New Day

Update:  Saturday, 4:22pm

Holy Underwear - it's snowing to beat the band!  If we were betting people, we would have bet it all on the Winter Storm Warning this morning.  Three inches has accumulated since the first flakes started falling at approximately 1:00pm.  Some of it's blowing sideways but it's still landing on the slopes.  We hope everyone is sticking around (just like the snow), to enjoy the freshies!

WOW - what a difference 24 hours makes!  Only 5 more inches to go...

After 2.56" of rain ((shudder)) yesterday, the weather turned more winter-like by evening allowing our crew time to reverse the effects -- our Snowmaking Team cranked out some hardcore snowmaking and the Groomer Crew pushed / pulled snow to reshape the slopes.  The cherry on top this morning is the Winter Storm Warning in effect.

...WINTER STORM WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT FROM 2 PM THIS AFTERNOON TO 4 AM EST SUNDAY... * WHAT...HEAVY SNOW EXPECTED. TOTAL SNOW ACCUMULATIONS OF 5 TO 7 INCHES, WITH LOCALIZED AMOUNTS UP TO 8 INCHES, ARE EXPECTED. * WHERE...IN MARYLAND, GARRETT COUNTY.

Eight is great!  It's going to be a awesome day on the mountain - we hope you enjoy every second!

Weathering the Weather

Update:  Friday, 3:00pm

The weather is starting to turn and the flakes are beginning the fall.  Current temperature is 37º which is already 15 degrees cooler than where we were this morning.  BRING ON THE SNOW AND COLD WEATHER!

Ski Operations will cease at 6:00pm tonight, Friday, February 16 and will re-open at 9:00am tomorrow, Saturday, February 17.  First Tracks will happen tomorrow:  Chair 2 or 3 opens at 8:00am for Season Pass and Multi-day Ticket Holders.

Ice Skating and the Mountain Coaster will operate from 4pm - 8pm tonight.  Snow Tubing will re-open tomorrow, Saturday, February 17.

While rains held off most of the day Thursday, overnight rainfall was significant and continues this morning. Not what we had ordered for the weekend but there is change coming.  Temperatures will be falling today and the forecast calls for a change to snow this afternoon.

Snowmaking will get underway as soon as conditions permit and we will turn the mountain white again. Snow is in the forecast for Saturday with up to six inches --yes, you read that correctly-- SIX inches possible. Sunday looks to be a great day of skiing.

Grooming machines are pushing snow and patching weak spots. There will be limitations today and we will be skiing on the front side of the mountain only as we repair North Camp and East Ridge slopes. Use caution as you ski today. Snow tubing will open later this afternoon.  Here is the updated Hours of Operation.  Please continue to check the Mountain Report for current slope status.

Snow is in the Forecast

The countdown to the weekend is on and we are watching the mercury closely with our eye on Friday evening.  This fickle weather has 24 hours to move out before our Snowmaking Team can get to work cranking out snow all over the mountain to refresh our surfaces.  Then comes the really good part - SNOW!  Garrett County is forecast up to 6 inches of accumulation.  We love visual aids so check out the image below and notice Wisp Resort in the red circle along the dark blue swath in the storm.  Stay up-to-date with slope conditions with the Mountain Report or see what we're up to on our Mountain Cams.

Q and A Session

How about a little Q&A?

Did you make snow Monday night?
Sure did.  We were able to refresh some surfaces overnight.

Did you see the forecast for the rest of this week?
Yep. Best we can tell, we’ll see some ‘Liquid Sunshine’ or ‘Underdeveloped Snow’ Wednesday thru Friday at 3pm.  Then Friday gets pretty freaky with snow showers after 4pm and a low of 18 degrees at night which means… we’ll be MAKING SNOW!  That’s right, hardcore snowmaking returns around the mountain into Saturday as long as weather permits.

How will the slopes hold up midweek?
Our Mountain Ops Team has strategized a plan this week to counter the effects of the wet weather best we can and keep the slopes covered.  Once the unwelcomed weather moves out, the Snowmaking and Grooming Teams will work in tandem on Friday to produce the best snow surface possible.

Can I still ski / ride in the rain?
You bet ya!  If you do plan to visit Wednesday, Thursday or Friday morning, break out your best waterproof gear and have a ball.  It’s just water, right?!  Oh, and keep in mind the forecast has been known to change from time to time here in Garrett County.

Snowmaking is Back!

Update - 11:24am

Snowmaking is underway!  Looks like Mother Nature is coming to the table a bit early today and we are most thankful.  This early start will allow our Snowmaking Team more time to crank out the snow.  Check out the few pics below that we got right away or view our web cams.

Happy Hump Day and another day closer to an awesome weekend!  Rains ended yesterday afternoon and temperatures fell very slowly through the night. We picked up an inch of snow but no snowmaking opportunity as yet -- simply not cold enough with the high humidity.  As of 7:00am, we have 26° and 89% humidity – a poor wet blub of 25--Booo!  Alas, we expect a slight warm up today with temperatures and humidity falling late this afternoon into the evening. Hourly wet bulb prediction this morning shows nothing promising until around 3:00pm. Snowmaking crew has been on standby round-the-clock and as soon as conditions allow we will fire up snowmaking system.

Skiers and riders can rest assured that the mountain has good cover and grooming crew has kept slopes in good shape.

Snow and Safety

Another midweek day, another snowfall!  We've got a few fresh inches on the slopes this morning with up to 6 inches of possible accumulation in the next 24 hours.  Today's the perfect day to do some hot laps on the hill with little to no lift lines, fresh snow and mid-twenty temps. POW-POW!  Snowmaking will resume later this evening to pump up the base and refresh some areas.

National Safety Month

The National Ski Areas Association (NSAA) declared January National Safety Month in a nation-wide effort to bring awareness to safety at ski resorts.  Over the next few weeks, we'll highlight different safety programs and messages.  Please read, learn and practice!

Skier & Rider Responsibility Code

  1. Always stay in control, and be able to stop or avoid other people or objects.
  2. People ahead of you have the right of way. It is your responsibility to avoid them.
  3. You must not stop where you obstruct a trail, or are not visible from above.
  4. Whenever starting downhill or merging into a trail, look uphill and yield to others.
  5. Always use devices to help prevent runaway equipment.
  6. Observe all posted signs and warnings. Keep off closed trails and out of closed areas.
  7. Prior to using any lift, you must have the knowledge and ability to load, ride and unload safely.

KNOW THE CODE: IT'S YOUR RESPONSIBILITY. THIS IS A PARTIAL LIST.  BE SAFETY CONSCIOUS.

Ski Patrol

There is one department whose top priority is SAFETY.  And by safety, we mean Guest Safety.  The Wisp Ski Patrol has the monumental task of keeping our slopes (along with tubing hill and other areas) safe for guests to recreate on and caring for guests when an incident occurs.

Recently, December 2017, Wisp Ski Patrol managed an incident on the slopes where a young adult was involved.  The Patrol Team present was recognized by the mother of the injured in a touching letter and shortly thereafter was thanked by the Ownership and Management of Wisp Resort.  We share this letter as a testimony to all of the Ski Patrollers at Wisp Resort -- Thank You! -- click here to read the letter.  Below is the Wisp Patrol Team of 6 that responded to the incident.  Also pictured is the entire Wisp Patrol Team of the 17.18 Winter Season - Go Team!

More Terrain Opened

Surface conditions are super plush right now making for some fantastic skiing and snowboarding!  Despite cold temps and gusty winds, there are lots of happy faces on the slopes (you just can't see the smiles through the face masks).  A total of 12 trails have been opened this week for a grand total of 33 trails equating to 136 acres of terrain.  See you on the slopes!

Stay Safe & Warm

Be sure to bundle up and reduce exposure in the elements.  Stop by Outdoor Elements, Rossignol Concept Shop or Vertical Drop Shop to pick up any face masks, new gloves, hats, hand warmers and other ski essentials.

Frigid Friday

With 2" of new snow and groomers performing well overnight, the snow surface is in prime condition.  Temperatures are stuck in the single or negative digits and Garrett County is under a Wind Chill Warning until 3pm Saturday so please dress accordingly and use safe practices on the slopes by taking frequent breaks and using the buddy system.  If winds do impede safe operating measures, we may experience possible wind holds or delays in operations.  Please check the Mountain Report for up-to-date information.

Stage Wisp Kick-off Concert - cancelled

As exited as we were to kick-off the Stage Wisp Winter Concert Series, we had to cancel the concert tonight for the safety of the artists and concern for our guests.  This gives us cause to get doubly excited about next week's concert that kicks off Martin Luther King Weekend on Friday, January 12 with Optimus Riff Trio and Star Hill Brewery.
