Wisp Resort Set to Re-Open for Winter

In February, Wisp Resort was forced by rain and temperatures in the 50’s to suspend skiing and snowboarding operations.  Now, in the midst of a cold and snowy March, Wisp Resort is anticipating a re-opening of winter operations sometime this week.  The exact day will depend on just how much natural snow Deep Creek Lake gets from Winter Storm Stella and how much machine-made snow we can make with the colder temperatures.

With a depleted snow base and mild forecast, Wisp Resort closed for skiing two weeks ago after just 72 days of operation.  It was the lowest number of operating days in the past ten years even though we had pumped more than 160 million gallons of water for snowmaking up to that date, the third highest total in the past ten years.  “The weather was pretty uncooperative this winter,” dryly noted Artie Speicher, Mountain Operations Director at Wisp.  “Mother Nature was testing our resolve, just like she is now.  She’s given us another window this week, so we’re going to make the most of it.”

The Deep Creek Lake Area received 5 inches of snow on Friday, March 10 along with temperatures dipping into the single digits.  Wisp’s snowmaking team will be making snow as weather permits this week, and Winter Storm Stella is expected to add several more inches of natural snow Tuesday.  Stay tuned for updates and opening announcements.

16.17 Winter Season Comes to an End

Due to the historic, unseasonably warm rainy weather, Snow Tubing, Ice Skating and Slope conditions have deteriorated to a degree that Wisp Resort is closing for the season as of 5 pm Sunday, February 26. The forecast for the next several days calls for continued high temperatures in the upper 50’s with more rain. There is no sign of any winter weather over the next several weeks.  After opening on December 16 and closing February 26, Wisp operated for 72 consecutive days this winter.

The Mountain Park will continue to operate on weekends with the Mountain Coaster, Aerial Ropes Courses, Archery and Gem Mining.  Please visit our Hours of Operation page for the most current schedules.

Thanks to all who have done a stellar job in making the most we could out of a difficult season.

Weekend Outlook

With temperatures expected to spike at 71 degrees today in Deep Creek Lake, we have mixed emotions about this crazy weather.  Yes, warm sun on winter-pale skin feels wonderful but our skis/boards are not ready to be hung up for the season.  Yes, the glistening waters of Deep Creek Lake are beautiful but we prefer snowy-white slopes in February.  We are making the most of what we've got so let's get out and ski this weekend!

Ski & Ride Operation Reminders:

  • Night skiing will close at 8:00pm on Friday & Saturday, February 24 & 25
  • Last First Tracks - the last first tracks of the season is Saturday, February 25 starting at 8:00am

Mountain Park

There's lots of fun to be had at the Mountain Park - Mountain Coaster, Ice Skating, Chipmunk Challenge Course, Spider Monkey Adventure.  Ice Skating will conclude for the season on Sunday, February 26.

Perfect Snow Day

With 7.5" of fresh snow, a bluebird sky and crisp temperatures, today is a PERFECT SNOW DAY!  Happy skier and riders were out in full force this morning to grab fresh powder turns including our valiant Ski Patrollers.  Snowmaking may be present on open terrain today because as they say - make hay when you can - and since Mother Nature keeps throwing curve balls at us with several thaws this winter, we want to ensure you have the best skiing and riding surface possible.  This will set us up for a weekend of stellar conditions!

Speaking of Ski Patrol...

Did you know that the Ski Patrol has a long history at Wisp Resort?  When Wisp Resort opened in the mid 1950's, ski clubs generally brought their own patrollers with them. As Wisp grew, the need for a permanent patrol was evident. George Kearns, Barney Dunbar, Bruce Anderson, and others worked with the late Wisp founder, Helmuth 'Ace' Heise to establish the patrol. By the late 70's, the ski patrol had grown to 70 members and hired paid patrollers to cover weekdays. Today,  Wisp Resort's Ski Patrol is made up of 88 active patrollers, 76 of which are volunteer and come from all over the region including Baltimore, Washington, D.C., and Pittsburgh.  The current  Patrol Team has 1,205 years of combined experience on the slopes!  If you are interested in joining the Wisp Ski Patrol, visit wispskipatrol.com.  March 4 marks the first phase of training with the on-snow 'Ski Off'.  Read more here.  Thanks for keeping us safe Patrollers!

Terrain Parks

Central Park Terrain Park, designed for advanced to expert freestylers, is currently open with 12 features including multiple tubes, rails and jumps up to 25-feet.  Hang out on the outskirts or at the base of the park to watch some truly talented freestylers strut their stuff.  If you are just getting into freestyle skiing or riding, the newly opened Lower Boulder Park, located at the base of Boulder Run, is made for you with 5 smaller features including 2 table top jumps along with a few benches and bars.

Happy February / Nordic Center

Happy February skiers, riders and all snow enthusiasts!  It's SNOWING again at Wisp Resort which has made very good conditions GREAT today with 4" of new snow since this morning.  Today is one of those days where the ride up the lift is almost as enjoyable as the downhill slide and the only sound on the chairlift is the sound of snow falling.  There are many different kinds of snowfall (blizzard, mixed precip, fluffy flakes, pellet flakes, etc) but today is an idyllic snowfall with no wind, perfect flakes and not-too-cold temps.  Trail pick of the day is definitely Mainstreet - with plush powder coverage, low-to-no skier traffic and Chairlift Attendant, Jeff Wilson, at the bottom of Chair 5 ready to load with a smile!  Side note:  The Wisperer captured a pic of a friendly little waterfall in the woods looking like something out of a Bob Ross painting.  We just had to share it's tranquil beauty.

The Nordic Center

Located within Sundown Village, the Nordic Center offers Cross Country Skiing (aka Nordic Skiing) and Snowshoeing trails, rentals and lessons.  Rentals go out of the Appalachian Yurt and the Nordic Trail System covers the Fantasy Valley Golf Course so when Mother Nature does her thing, we groom the trails for cross country skiing and snowshoeing.  Cross Country Skiing and Snowshoeing can be as intense or as leisure as you make of it, from a heart-pounding calorie burning workout to a peaceful stroll through the snow.  Wisp Kids Supervisor, Tracy Rush, took a short spin on the Nordic Course today.  If you are looking to get into either sport, Wisp offers a Learn-to Cross Country Ski or Snowshoe Package for $44 standard days and $49 premium days, the package includes a nordic trail pass, equipment rental and intro lesson.

Sundown Cafe

When you need to refuel from playing in the snow, Sundown Cafe has what you need - counter service cafe with fast and healthy options, a quaint bar and a dining yurt with slope views.  A local favorite on the menu is the Southwest Turkey Wrap - it's a must-try!

Terrain Opening Update & Thank a Snowmaker

With extremely cold weather for the past four days, Wisp's Snowmaking Team has done some hard core snowmaking!  The photos below that were taken today show the massive piles of snow this hard-working crew has created over the past few days.  (And Bear, the dog, who was properly dressed for the weather and loving it!)  These snow piles are often referred to as whale-backs and some of them resemble volcanos while others like sculptures.  Soon, these piles will become beautifully groomed trails to ski on!  And that's the big question - when will more terrain open?

We plan to open the East Ridge on Tuesday, January 10 with Down Under, Main Street, Highline, and Lower Eye Opener along with Chairs 4 and 5.  Snowmaking continues on Upper Eye Opener and Odin’s Chute which may come online later this week.  Possum trail was loaded with snowguns last night with a goal to open for Martin Luther King, Jr. Weekend.

The Snowmaking Team is a group of hard working dedicated individuals that perform their job in some of the most extreme conditions. They work through the tough elements of nature for 12 hour shifts to turn our mountain into a winter wonderland.  A shift will usually start with a quick review of the weather forecast, the snowmaking plan, and work assignments while all of the crew is putting on layers of clothes before heading out to the slopes.  The crew is usually sent out in teams of 2, this is due to the many potential hazards of the job. The snowmakers will be encountering icy slopes, cold temperatures, high voltage equipment, and high pressure water.

Once out on the mountain, the crews trek down the trails on foot or sometimes snowmobile.  The Controller in the Pumphouse will wait for requests from the team on the ground to turn on the guns.  Only after hoses are attached to the guns, power turned on to the equipment, and water put to the guns; does the magical plume of snow shoot from the snowmaking gun.  Snowmakers walk out to where the plume is falling and check the crystal formation then adjusts the water flow in the gun to control the quality and quantity of the snow being produced. This is a process that will continue throughout the entire shift as the temperature and humidity constantly change, which affect the type of snow being produced.

Snowmaking is one of the hardest physical jobs on the mountain. Wet, cold and frozen are all daily occurrences in the life of a snowmaker.  A veteran snowmaker was once heard interviewing a new recruit, “So you want to make snow? Have you ever ran thru a car wash at 10 degrees in your underwear? Well, that is what snowmaking can be!”  Snowmakers have a strong passion for making snow. They take great pride in watching the trail grow from blades of grass to massive piles of snow and watching people ski and ride on what they produce.  Next time your see a bundled up frozen Snowmaker checking their plume of snow, stop and thank them.

A nite's tale - Groomer / Snowcat Operator

A NIGHTS TALE – A SNOWCAT OPERATOR
by Director of Mountain Operations, Artie Speicher

To the vast majority of us who leave behind carved-up slopes and return the next morning to find smooth perfect corduroy surfaces, what happens under the cover of darkness is a little like magic. In reality, it’s not, grooming is part snow science, part instinct, long high-energy playlist, much caffeine, and—even though those tough-as-nails groomers might not admit it—a lot of love for the mountain and snow.

Set the scene:  It’s now  9:30pm and velvety dark has swallowed the slopes, save for the snowcat’s headlight beams, which lead the way uphill, then downhill, then uphill again. On the back of the snowcat is a tiller, which first churns the snow, then presses it into corduroy. Marshall Lewis is using it to groom Wisp Trail, one of Wisp’s green-circle runs. Marshall is the grooming supervisor leading a team of hardy men, who seem to thrive on a lack of sleep.

His job seems as rad as everyone says it is, but he does not seem bothered by its oddities: working almost solo, in the dark, and all night long. The night is the opposite of the hectic busy day that had occurred on the resorts slopes. It is a peaceful night, the stars, the wildlife, the graveyard shift’s sunrise; the views from the top of the mountain all are some of the reasons why he and his crew love what they do. However, it runs deeper than that, they take great pride in providing smooth perfect corduroy runs behind each pass of the machine.

He gets a radio call from one of the other snowcat operators working in North Camp, where snowmaking has been running most of the night, he asks for some help as the piles of freshly made snow are quite large. Marshall aims his machine and heads to the North Camp area. When he arrives he raises the tiller and starts to spread the snow across the slope. He moves the snowcat back and forth across the trail each time pushing the snow from the huge pile to spread it to an even coverage on the grassy slope with precision, his hands moving like grease lightning as he controls both the power to the tracks and the blade on the front of the machine which seems to move in many directions but always leaving a smooth even surface.

The crew will continue the process throughout the night 10 to 12 hours on the shift. They will generally meet at the shop for a dinner break and to re-fuel their machines. It is a job that requires long hours, but like the snowmakers, the groomers are an integral part of providing a great snow surface and are an important part of Wisp’s Mountain Operations Team.

Ready. Set. Snow!

Looks like Mother Nature is giving us her first taste of Winter for 2017 starting today!  The temperature is steadily dropping and our Mountain Ops Team is poised to make snow.  Snowmaking will continue into the weekend with temps forecasted to range from the low 20s to single digits over the next couple of days.  Plus, we may even see a few inches of natural snow. The Snowmaking Crew will first focus efforts on already open terrain with thinning coverage then move to unopened terrain.  Our Grooming Team will be looking to massage those large piles of snow so we can open more terrain as soon as possible with a goal to have the majority of trails open next weekend for Martin Luther King, Jr Holiday.

Speaking of Martin Luther King, Jr Holiday Weekend - make your plans now!  The newly renovated slopeside Lodge at Wisp is THE place to stay during your winter getaway. With 100 completely renovated rooms, new entrance and check-in area plus, a cozy Court Yard with a fire pit that just screams apres ski, you'll appreciate the comfort and convenience it has to offer. Happy New Year

Happy New Year - Welcome to 2017!  As the holidays come to a close, we want to thank all of our guests that visited the resort during the holiday season.  We appreciate you choosing Wisp Resort as the gathering place to spend your precious time with friends and family and hope you will be back again this winter season.  With a new year, comes new opportunities for change and in our case, we are waiting on a change in weather.  This roller coaster of weather will take a turn midweek and is forecasted to bring favorable snowmaking conditions starting Wednesday evening, January 4.   Wisp's Mountain Ops Team plans to make snow on the currently open terrain with thin cover then begin snowmaking on unopened terrain in hopes of having all slopes and trails online for Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday Weekend, January 13 - 16.  One of the job perks of being a Snowmaker is to witness incredible sunrises like the one pictured below that was taken by Snowmaker Colby Broadwater just a few days ago.

There are a few activities at Wisp Resort that don't require any snow - Ice Skating and the Mountain Coaster.  Both activities are located in the Mountain Park and operate on the same schedule as Snow Tubing.  The 50' X 85' oval Ice Rink creates it's own climate with a 100 ton chiller and uses a mini-Zamboni® to groom the surface.  The Mountain Coaster is a gravitational hybrid of an Alpine Slide and a Roller Coaster boasting a 1,300-foot uphill track while twisting, turning, dipping, and rolling for 3,500-feet downhill over 350 vertical feet.  Individual tickets are available for both activities or save a few dollars with the Winter Adventure Combo that includes an Ice Skating Session with skate rental, a single Mountain Coaster ride and a Snow Tubing session.
